Over the weekend a couple of friends and I went outside Colombo for some rafting adventures. It has been a while since I left the city walls and thought it would be great way to spend some time with my friends. Kithulgala is a few hours drive from Colombo and we reached our destination around 10AM (left home after much argument and running around at 7:45AM. Mind you, we were supposed to leave at the crack of dawn).
After a rather squeamish round of talking about leeches and other slimy nastiness that could latch on to us, we lathered ourselves in Vaseline and other local ointments sworn to keep the nasties away and headed back on the road. Clad in tight life jackets and funny looking helmets, we got on to a lorry (safe, right? Totally.) and headed to the water.
The total raft down the river was about 45 minutes. To be honest, I think our guide was rather irritated because we were a loud bunch and whatever he said would go over us because we were too busy laughing, screaming, consoling and making fun of each other. This may or may not be why a few of us were on the verge of falling and cracking our heads on the rocks (oops). The rapids weren’t strong, but there were a few that took us by surprise! I’m just still surprised I managed to stay on the raft knowing what a clumsy person I am (insert a round of applause here for myself). We floated down the last rapids without the raft. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge my bravery that I did it, shall we? Haha.
Our next adventure was abseiling! The hike up to the top the river was a bit anticlimactic just because we wanted to get back into the water, but guys, the hike was worth the wait. We jumped into pools of water, slid down rocks into more pools and just had the time of our lives laughing as we held hands and jumped off seemingly scary cliffs.
Of course, as we were going back for lunch (which was at about 5:30PM), I slipped down a flight of stairs and hit every stair as I went down. My bum was bruised beyond recognition and I’m living to tell the story. Did I injure myself on our actual adventure? Nope. But did I fall down a flight of steady stairs on our way back? You bet I did. Karma wanted a laugh that day, I guess.
After lunch, we headed back to Colombo and stopped by for a quick dinner before parting ways. It was an absolutely great time with friends and I was so happy to be in their company along with new friends I made that day! My descriptions don’t do the whole adventure justice, so here are some snaps of the day.
It feels absolutely amazing to be blogging again and I am wholeheartedly sorry for going MIA for a while. I just started work (whoohoo!) and been a tad busy with it. I know it’s not an excuse and I’m trying my best to be consistent from here on out! Anyway, enough with my excuse/rant/something and I’ll see you guys soon!
